The city of St. Joseph is the latest to call off the Independence Day fireworks celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This just isn’t a summer when so many of our treasured cultural events are going to be possible,” said City Manager John Hodgson Monday night. “We just can’t bring those sort of numbers of people to town. This would have been unimaginable six months ago, but we recommend the 2020 Independence Day Fireworks Show be canceled.”

The vote to cancel the event was unanimous.

Hodgson said Movies in the Park are still on for the summer, but that remains subject to change, and the municipal band concerts are going to be different.

South Haven was the first to cancel the fireworks, but it was due to high water on Lake Michigan and happened before the pandemic.
