Statewide, there are 1,191 new cases as of Thursday afternoon for a total of 49,582 with 73 new deaths for a total of 4,787. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the increase in new cases is sharply higher than previous days because of backlogged reports now being entered electronically from three private labs. Nearly half of the new deaths reported statewide are due to a Vital Records review of death certificates, which is done three times per week.
