South Haven City Manager Brian Dissette says he’s again reminding city council members about the warnings coming from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that Lake Michigan flooding will remain a problem for months. Dissette says the water levels are predicted to keep going up through July, and the piers are already underwater some days and flooding is impacting property owners along Dunkley Avenue and North Shore Drive. Dissette says the council is prepared to spend money to combat the high water issue in those spots.

“The council made it very clear that there’s a willingness from elected leadership to pursue those construction projects, but they also made clear they desire to implement a special assessment district to ensure that the people receiving the benefits are helping to pay the immediate costs of that benefit,” said Dissette.

Dissette says city staff is now working on the engineering plan and will bring those back to the city council along with the proposal for fees and the special assessment.
