Just because things are opening up, that doesn’t mean the pandemic is over. So says Berrien County Health Department spokesperson Gillian Conrad, who is asking that everyone still wear masks, social distance, and practice diligent hygiene. She tells WSJM News health officials want to see a continuation of recent trends in COVID numbers.

“This is a good thing, and we really hope that we can continue this trend of seeing overall cases decline and our percent positivity with tests also continue to decline,” Conrad said.

A positive is what the health department is seeing in regards to case numbers following recent events.

“Whether it’s peaceful protests for Black Lives Matter, or just get togethers, large events that might start to happen, we are watching those numbers very carefully. At this moment in time, we have not seen any sudden spikes in infections based on those events, particularly Memorial Day weekend.”

Conrad says many of the people who came to Berrien County for Memorial Day were from out of state, and therefore the county health department would not know what their COVID-19 tests looked like. Still, she is encouraged the overall daily cases have remained low.
