The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign for the Fourth of July. As the holiday approaches, it says you will see increased enforcement on the roads with zero tolerance for those who drive impaired. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, drunk driving accounted for 29% of crash deaths in 2018. With Fourth of July festivities wrapping up in the evening or late at night, more cars will be on the roads late. In 2018 alone, 193 people died in traffic crashes over the July 4 holiday period, and 40% of those involved alcohol. Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey warns, “If we catch you driving under the influence of alcohol, we will arrest you, and you’ll receive a DUI. That DUI will follow you throughout your life.” He urges those celebrating Independence Day to designate a sober driver before heading out for the day.
