A major reconstruction and improvement project is underway on Red Arrow Highway in Union Pier. The Berrien County Board of Commissioners last week signed off on the county’s portion of the work, which will be repaving from Community Hall to Berrien Street. However, Chikaming Township Supervisor David Bunte tells WSJM News that’s just one phase of a bigger plan.

“We’re working together with business owners and property owners to improve the intersection, and at the same time, have coordinated a massive sewer replacement project and also some streetscape improvements that will be the next phase going forward here,” Bunte said.

Bunte says with Union Pier becoming a more popular destination for tourists, New Buffalo and Chikaming townships decided to team up for the beautification effort.

“It will be a lot different when it’ all done. The goal is just a good economic shot in the arm, too, for Union Pier. You can’t do it without a partnership with New Buffalo [Township], and we’ve worked together on all of this, and I think the end result people are going to be pretty impressed with, and that’s the goal”

Sewer work on Red Arrow Highway in Union Pier has been underway since April, and Bunte says the road should be back open to traffic this week. He’s hoping the total project — landscaping and all — can be done next spring, and says a ribbon cutting will be held at that time.
