The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday in a case that could determine whether women have access to abortion medication.

The arguments are focused on whether the FDA overstepped its authority when it made it easier to obtain mifepristone, an abortion medication.

Speaking Tuesday morning, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said limiting access to the drug would impact access to abortion care for women across the country, including in Michigan. Whitmer also says she’s preparing to sign legislation for IVF soon.

The Michigan Legislature is sending legislation,” Whitmer said. “It’s the Michigan Family Protection Act. This will continue to support families to make sure that IVF is accessible, but also that families in Michigan who are looking to start a family, but can’t, can look at surrogacy as an option.”

Whitmer says her administration is supporting families, but also recognizing that government should not be in the middle of a woman and her doctor and her family’s decision about when and where to bear a child.

Groups planned to protest Tuesday against the sale of mifepristone outside some CVS and Walgreens stores.
