The Biden Administration is offering $1.5 billion loan to the Palisades nuclear power plant in Van Buren County to get restarted.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer was on hand for the announcement this week and said the project is a phenomenal undertaking.

It was a long, windy road to get here, but I’m so happy to be here,” Whitmer said. “When we get it done, it’ll be the first restarted nuclear power plant in American history.”

The loan is conditional. To restart, the plant must complete certain technical, legal, and environmental conditions before receiving the funds.

Former Michigan Governor and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm says nuclear power is the single largest source of carbon free electricity and will support thousands of jobs across the country.
