Benton Harbor has been awarded a more than $19 million grant to make improvements to its sewer system.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy said Friday the city is receiving the grant through its Clean Water State Revolving Fund.

EGLE announced a total of $91 million in MI Clean Water grants in the latest round to communities throughout the state with Benton Harbor getting the largest amount.

The grant will be used for the replacement or rehabilitation of sanitary sewers throughout the city, upgrades at eight sanitary lift stations, and continued efforts related to Benton Harbor’s asset management plan.

The city has a lot of water and sewer infrastructure work that will be needed in the coming years and this should help.

Also receiving an MI Clean Water grant is New Buffalo Township, which has been awarded. $106,000
