Discussions in Lansing are slowly moving forward about a new way to fund road construction projects.

Last week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a mileage-based user fee system is under consideration to replace the current gas tax.

This all comes about because of electric vehicles and those drivers not having to pay for gas.

One of the people who will be involved in the talks is Ed Noyola, the legislative director at the County Road Association of Michigan. Noyola says the user-fee system would benefit people with older vehicles.

Those with older vehicles or pickup trucks or SUVs, they’re going to get probably less by miles per gallon, they’re going to pay more for sure,” Noyola said. “If you transition into the mileage-based user fee, that would mean that you would pay whatever the cent is per mile, and it’s generally probably more beneficial to those with those older, low-efficiency vehicles.”

Noyola says it would likely fall on each individual driver to report how many miles they drive in a year so they can be taxed properly.
