A Michigan House committee is moving forward on a measure to bring the film industry back to the state.

The committee this week approved the Multimedia Jobs Act. The act creates a tax credit designed to promote Michigan-produced films.

State Representative Jason Hoskins of Southfield says more than 40 states and cities have multimedia programs in place.

This is based on what other states have done and how we’ve seen the film industry, the multimedia industry in other states,” Hoskins said. “This is kind of what we base that off of, the investment, the small investment that states have made has really helped in creating billions more in revenue for those states.”

Hoskins said the act is expected to produce approximately $6 billion to $8 billion in direct spending in Michigan during the first 10 years.

The bill will now head to the full state House for a vote, nearly nine years after former Governor Rick Snyder ended a film incentives program.
