The new state budget could include more funding to investigating cold cases around Michigan.

State Representative Jason Morgan presented an overview of the Michigan State Police portion of the budget on Wednesday. It includes $400,000 dollars to distribute evenly to the cold case programs at Western Michigan University and Northern Michigan University.

These are programs that are providing workforce development training related to criminal investigation tactics, forensic science and law, and review of cold, homicide, and missing persons cases,” Morgan said. “This is a program that’s pairing students with law enforcement to solve cold cases and provide closure to victims and their families.”

The cold case budget was adopted unanimously on a 28 to 0 vote.

Also part of the MSP budget, Morgan is asking for more funding for climate change emergency disaster relief, including $50 million dollars to provide financial assistance to local governments to cover costs of natural events and disaster.
