The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has voted to hire Dr. Jonathan Beyer as the new Berrien County Medical Director.

At a Thursday meeting, County Administrator Brian Dissette said Beyer has plenty of experience working with the county and that the transition from Dr. Rex Cabaltica, who is moving out of state, should be seamless.

Commissioner Bob Harrison, who is a commission liaison on the Berrien County Board of Health, told us Beyer is a good fit.

Dr. Beyer is an emergency room physician,” Harrison said. “He’s very active with the county already. He works with the 911 group, also the Emergency Operations Center, and so he’s well-versed in what the county does.”

Dissette said the county is contracting with Corewell Health to bring on Beyer. For the new job, Beyer will be required to earn a master’s degree in public health within the next six years, something Corewell is paying for.

Beyer will be paid $105,000, the same amount paid to Cabaltica. The new appointment will also have to be approved by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
