Detroit police are tightening their summer safety strategy after six children were shot over the holiday weekend.
Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief Todd Bettison introduced their Teen Violence Prevention Plan Monday afternoon with a renewed focus on curfew violations.
“There are no teeth in the city’s parental responsibility ordinance,” Duggan said. “So, I will be asking city council to raise the fine from $75 to $250 in the first offense and from $100 to $500 on the second offense. I would ask them to raise it higher, but $500 is the maximum allowed under state law.”
Duggan says this isn’t just about policing, its about protecting.
The plan also includes deeper collaboration with community leaders and youth organizations.
