The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety is warning everyone that vehicle thefts have been on the rise lately.

The department says there have been 15 stolen or recovered vehicles in the city alone since June 15. Also, it’s seeing an uptick in thefts from vehicles and home invasions, with five each reported during that period.

The department says the incidents have been primarily on the south side of town and into Benton Township and St. Joseph Township.

The suspects have been described as teenage boys wearing masks and hoodies with backpacks, and a van has been reported as being associated with the possible offenders.

The department says the stolen vehicles are the same models as in the last wave of vehicle thefts — Kias and Hyundais.

Everyone’s reminded to keep their vehicles locked and not to leave valuables in them. Anyone who sees anything suspicious is asked to contact the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety.
