What happens to Michigan’s economy is there’s a government shutdown?
Essential jobs would continue, but many services would halt, and that would hurt the economy. Jace Bolger, president and CEO of the West Michigan Policy Forum, is calling for a focus on funding pensions.
“A fully funded teacher, trooper, and state employee retirement promises without passing those obligations to our kids and grandkids,” Bolger said.
Bolger says Governor Gretchen Whitmer plays an important role in leading the Senate and House through these budget negotiations, and she needs to lean into Senate Democrats to convince them to get to the table with House Republicans.
The Legislature has an October 1 deadline to get a budget approved, or there’s a shutdown.
