The daughter of an Illinois state representative was arrested after she allegedly attacked her mother’s opponent with a staple gun in front of his campaign office.

26-year-old Jessica Soto, daughter of Rep. Cynthia Soto, faces three aggravated battery charges, including with a deadly weapon, causing great bodily harm and in a public place. Her boyfriend has also been charged with the same crimes and an additional charge for a felony count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report about the altercation.

Less than two weeks before the election, Bob (Robert) Zwolinski said he and his girlfriend saw a man and woman stapling signs outside his campaign office. He stopped to question them, and says that’s when they attacked him.

He said the young woman pounced on his back, scratching and tearing at him before she hit him over the head with an empty Corona bottle. She then kicked him in the face and shot the staple gun into his forehead.

Zwolinski ended up receiving 6 stitches in the head for the staple and also suffered a crack in his nose but no broken bones. A lawyer for Soto and her boyfriend says that Zwolinski attacked them and stapled his own head.

None of this had any affect on Cynthia Soto’s campaign as she defeated Zwolinski on Tuesday in a landslide election for her seat. She got nearly 80 percent of the vote.
